Shipping Cookware from India: Containers, Costs & Timelines

Freight is where cookware margins quietly die - it is heavy and bulky. Understand the options and you protect 5-15% of margin.

FCL vs LCL

  • FCL (full container): your goods alone. 20ft (~28 CBM) or 40ft (~58 CBM). Cheaper per unit, faster, less handling damage.
  • LCL (shared): pay per CBM for smaller orders. More handling, longer transit, higher damage risk - fine for trials, painful at scale.

Rule of thumb: above ~15 CBM, FCL usually wins on cost alone.

Timelines (port to port)

  • India → Middle East: 7-12 days
  • India → Europe: 20-30 days
  • India → US East Coast: 30-40 days
  • India → Africa: 15-30 days

Add 1-2 weeks for booking, customs and last-mile at each end.

Cutting freight costs

  1. Packaging density: every wasted cm of carton is freight paid for air - optimise carton sizes with the factory
  2. Book early: spot rates spike; 3-4 week advance booking saves 10-30%
  3. Avoid peak season: pre-Christmas and pre-Chinese-New-Year surcharges are brutal
  4. Compare forwarders: get 3 quotes, every time

Frequently asked questions

How much is sea freight for a 20ft container from India?

Roughly $1,500-$4,000 to most destinations, varying by route, season and fuel surcharges. Always get current quotes.

FCL or LCL for 500 cartons?

Calculate CBM first - 500 cookware cartons often fill a 20ft. Above ~15 CBM, FCL is usually cheaper and safer.
