OEM Cookware MOQ Explained: Minimums, Costs & Negotiation
MOQ - minimum order quantity - is the first number every OEM conversation starts with, and the most misunderstood. Here is why factories set minimums, what is typical for cookware, and how to negotiate them down without damaging the relationship.
Why MOQs exist
Factories set MOQs because setup costs are fixed: machine setup, polishing line changeover, engraving plates, custom carton printing. Below a certain volume, the setup cost per piece destroys the price. MOQ is the factory’s way of keeping your per-unit price sane.
Typical cookware MOQs
- Standard shapes, your branding: 500-2,000 pcs per SKU
- Custom sizes: 1,000-3,000 pcs per SKU
- Fully custom tooling: 3,000-10,000 pcs
- Tri-ply circles (raw material): 100-300 kg
These are market-typical ranges - always confirm with your factory.
How MOQ affects your price
Doubling order volume typically cuts per-unit cost 8-20% because fixed setup spreads thinner and material is bought in bulk. Get quotes at two quantities (e.g. 1,000 and 3,000) to see your curve before committing.
5 ways to negotiate lower MOQs
- Start with stock shapes - no tooling means lower minimums.
- Consolidate SKUs - fewer variants, deeper per-variant volume.
- Share tooling cost - pay the setup fee separately for a lower per-unit MOQ.
- Commit to a roadmap - "1,000 now, 5,000 next quarter" unlocks flexibility.
- Accept longer lead time - your order can ride alongside another production run.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order below MOQ?
Sometimes, at a higher per-unit price or by sharing setup costs. Ask - factories prefer a small paid order to no order.
Does MOQ apply per size or per order?
Usually per SKU (product + size + finish). Five sizes means five MOQs - another reason to consolidate your launch range.
