Tri-Ply Circles

Circle vs Disc vs Blank: Sheet Metal Terminology for Buyers

Suppliers use these three words differently - and mixing them up in an RFQ gets you wrong quotes.

Circle

A round shape cut from sheet/coil - the general term. "Tri-ply circle" = round tri-ply piece, any size.

Disc

Often implies a thicker, machined round (common in industrial/flange contexts). In cookware, "disc" and "circle" are used interchangeably - but clarify thickness expectations.

Blank

A production-ready piece cut to the exact size for a specific forming operation. "Kadhai blank" = the circle sized for pressing that kadhai. Blanks imply tighter tolerances than generic circles.

How to spec it

In RFQs, write: "tri-ply circles (blanks), 460 mm dia × 2.0 mm, SS304/Al/SS430, deburred, ±0.5 mm tolerance" - material, dimensions, condition and tolerance in one line.

Frequently asked questions

Is a blank the same as a circle?

A blank is a circle cut for a specific forming job with tighter tolerances. All blanks are circles; not all circles are blanks.
