Tri-Ply Circles
What Diameter Tri-Ply Circle Do You Need? (Size Guide)
Order the wrong diameter and you either waste steel or cannot draw the vessel. Here is how manufacturers size it right.
The rule
Blank diameter ≈ finished diameter + 2× draw depth + trim allowance. Deep drawing stretches the circle’s edge into the vessel wall - a 24 cm kadhai that is 10 cm deep needs roughly a 44-48 cm blank, not a 24 cm one.
Standard finished sizes → blank sizes
- 14-18 cm saucepan/tope: ~30-38 cm blank
- 20-26 cm kadhai/frypan: ~40-52 cm blank
- 28-30 cm kadhai: ~54-60 cm blank
Exact blanks depend on depth, wall angle and trim - confirm with your tooling engineer.
Draw ratio limits
Tri-ply draws less aggressively than single metals. Pushing the draw ratio causes tearing at the wall or orange-peel texture. When in doubt, go one blank size up - steel is cheaper than scrap vessels.
Ordering smart
Standardise your range on common blank diameters - suppliers stock them, prices drop, and lead times shrink versus odd sizes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate circle diameter for a kadhai?
Blank ≈ finished diameter + 2× depth + trim allowance. A 24 cm × 10 cm kadhai needs roughly a 46 cm blank.
What is the standard tri-ply circle diameter range?
Suppliers commonly stock 100-500 mm+, with cookware blanks concentrated in 300-600 mm.
