Tri-Ply Circles
Burrs on Blanking: Why Deburred Circles Matter
A 0.2 mm burr seems trivial - until it scores your die, tears a vessel wall, or injures a handler. Edge quality is a spec, not a detail.
How burrs form
Blanking shears the metal; the break edge always carries some burr. Dull punches make bigger burrs - burr height is a direct readout of tooling condition at the supplier.
Why they matter
- Drawing defects: burrs catch and tear during deep draw
- Die damage: hardened burrs score expensive tooling
- Safety: handlers get cut
- Coating/finish: burrs telegraph through polishing
The spec
Demand "deburred, max burr height 0.1 mm" and check edges by touch on incoming inspection. Consistent heavy burrs = find a new supplier.
Frequently asked questions
What is an acceptable burr height?
Under 0.1 mm for deburred circles. Anything you can feel catching a fingernail is too much.
