Tri-Ply Circles
How to Store and Handle Tri-Ply Circles (Protect Your Material)
Circles are precision material. Treat them like scrap and they will press like scrap - scratches, dents and edge damage become vessel defects.
The 6 rules
- Interleave: paper or film between circles - steel-on-steel contact scratches
- Flat and level: store horizontally on flat pallets; warped stacks press warped vessels
- Dry: moisture + steel = surface staining; keep covered, use dehumidified storage in monsoon climates
- Edge protection: dented edges tear in deep drawing - handle by the faces, never drop
- Weight limits: don’t over-stack; bottom circles deform under excessive load
- FIFO: first in, first out - rotate stock, especially across steel price cycles
Handling at the press
Clean gloves (skin oils cause drawing defects), dedicated circle carts - never drag across concrete - and a quick visual check as each circle loads. Two seconds per circle prevents a bin of rejects.
Frequently asked questions
Can tri-ply circles rust in storage?
Surface staining can occur with prolonged moisture exposure. Store dry, covered and interleaved.
How high can I stack circles?
Follow your supplier’s guidance - over-stacking deforms bottom circles. When in doubt, lower stacks on rigid pallets.
