OEM Cookware Quality Control: A Buyer’s Inspection Guide
Quality control is not a department - it is a contract clause. This guide covers exactly what to inspect on OEM cookware, how to sample, and when to bring in a third-party inspector.
The 8 checks that matter
- Bond integrity (triply): no delamination, no hollow sound on tapping
- Gauge: wall thickness matches spec (±0.05 mm typical)
- Finish: uniform polish, no scratches, no pits
- Handles: rivet/weld strength - pull-test samples
- Lids: fit, no wobble
- Engraving: logo correct, legible, positioned
- Induction: every piece tested on an induction hob
- Packaging: correct box, barcode scannable, drop-test a carton
AQL sampling, simply
You cannot inspect 10,000 pieces one by one. AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) sampling inspects a statistically valid subset - e.g. 200 pieces from a 5,000-piece lot - and the lot passes or fails on defect counts. Agree the AQL level (2.5 for major defects is common) in writing, before production.
In-house QC vs third-party inspection
Factory QC catches process issues early - insist on photo reports at 3 stages: raw material, mid-production, pre-shipment. For orders above ~$10,000, a third-party inspector (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV) does a pre-shipment inspection for a few hundred dollars. It is the cheapest insurance in sourcing.
Put it in the contract
Your QC terms belong in the purchase contract: inspection standard, who inspects, who pays for rework, and what happens on lot failure (rework vs remake vs refund). Verbal QC promises are worth nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What is AQL 2.5?
An inspection standard allowing 2.5% major defects in the sample. It is the common baseline for consumer goods including cookware.
How much does third-party inspection cost?
Typically $200-$400 per man-day in India/China - trivial against a container’s value.
