Triply Cookware
How to Identify Genuine Triply Cookware (Spot Fakes)
"Triply" on the box doesn’t always mean triply in the pan. Six checks separate the genuine from the pretenders.
The 6 tests
- Weight: genuine triply is heavy - a 24 cm kadhai under ~1 kg is suspect.
- Wall check: look at the rim - you should see the layered sandwich, and cladding should run the full wall, not just a base disc.
- Magnet test: a magnet should stick firmly to the outer base (SS430 layer). Weak/no attraction = no induction layer.
- Heat test: boil water - genuine triply heats evenly with no single scorching hotspot ring.
- Price sanity: three metals + bonding cost real money. A "triply" kadhai at single-ply prices isn’t triply.
- Documentation: reputable brands state grades (SS304/430) explicitly. Vague "food-grade steel" = evasion.
Common fakes
- Base-only "triply": clad disc welded to single-steel walls - sides scorch
- Thin-core triply: technically 3 layers, negligible aluminium - performs like single-ply
- 201-substituted: cheaper steel grade sold as 304
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if cookware is really triply?
Check the rim for visible layers, verify full-wall cladding, magnet-test the base, and weigh it - genuine triply is substantial.
What is fake triply?
Usually base-only cladding on single-steel walls, negligible aluminium cores, or cheaper steel grades - sold at triply prices.
