BIS Certification for Cookware: What Manufacturers Must Know

BIS certification is mandatory for some cookware categories in India - and a trust signal for all of them.

What’s mandatory

Pressure cookers carry mandatory BIS (IS 2347). For other stainless cookware, BIS is currently voluntary - but major retail and institutional buyers increasingly demand it.

The process

  1. Application to BIS with product details
  2. Factory inspection by BIS officers
  3. Sample testing at BIS labs
  4. Licence grant + ISI mark usage rights
  5. Surveillance inspections thereafter

Costs & timelines

Budget ₹1-3 lakh all-in and 4-8 months. The factory inspection is the hurdle - get your QC documentation in order first.

Why bother (voluntary)

ISI mark = instant trust with Indian distributors, retailers and government buyers. For OEM brands, it’s a differentiator competitors can’t fake.
